_I Do Declare: David Cook Wants to Stick Around
October 2009

Last year’s "American Idol” winner David Cook recently sang at the Major League Baseball State Farm Home Run Derby.
Calling the opportunity “a huge deal,” the 26-year-old rocker once dreamt of playing in the Pros, but soon discovered his vocal pitch exceeded the talents of his pitching arm. Per his official website, Cook also admitted, “I couldn’t hit to save my life.”
In the best of ironies, Cook has had more hits than he ever thought possible –just not from home plate.
Breaking Billboard chart records with singles such as “The Time of My Life” and “Light On,” and earning 56 percent of the nation’s vote to best runner-up and dual David (Archuleta) on the infamous reality competition show, Cook has maintained his humble Midwestern attitude as he adjusts to life post-“Idol.”
The hardest change thus far, other than lack of sleep, he said, has been “a general change of lifestyle” – a change that includes having a specific hour of each day allotted to handling press during his current Declaration Tour.
“It’s intense, isn’t it?” Cook said laughing at the fact, adding sincerely, “I got lucky. I enjoy playing. I enjoy traveling, and I get to do both with this gig.”
Still, back-to-back tour dates leave little time spared for anything else, much less…romance. Female fans can hold out hope in knowing that Cook, for the moment, doesn’t have a special someone to “leave the light on” for him.
“The light is off currently,” Cook said wryly.
Although not opposed to partaking in future non-musical ambitions such as acting or hosting as former “Idol” contestants have done, Cook plans to focus on his live shows, widening the scope of what fans have come to expect from his appearances on “Idol.”
“It was hard doing ‘Idol’ in the sense of being a rock musician and having that kind of musical taste. I’ve always found it pretty difficult to pinpoint somebody in two hours,” Cook said.
“I really want to showcase other aspects of myself musically.”
Describing himself as both an “open book” and “work in progress,” Cook has used his fairly new-found fame and success to participate in notable causes like performing for the troops overseas and becoming involved with cancer funding and research, an all-too personal fight for Cook, having lost his elder brother to the disease just a few months ago.
“I think the goal right now [is] to just stick around,” said Cook, which shouldn’t be a challenge, as long as his millions of Idol-izers continue to follow in the cast of his light.
