_Ryan Cabrera: On the Way Up
January 2009
A handsome 26-year-old Texan named Ryan Cabrera burst onto the music scene in 2004 and within a couple of years, had two top-selling albums and a handful of Billboard hits including “On the Way Down,” “True,” and “Photo.”
Aside from his infectious pop/rock melodies, Cabrera’s notoriety expanded from his past relationship with fellow artist, Ashlee Simpson, of the now famous family including sister Jessica and manager dad Joe Simpson, who still represents Cabrera today.
Also, in 2006, his beautifully sentimental song “I Will Remember You” serenaded the series finale of “Will & Grace” has since become a fan favorite.
Now, as the year 2009 begins, loyal listeners welcome Cabrera’s return after a creative hiatus, writing and recording his third album, The Moon Under Water, released in May 2008.
During this time, Cabrera made a risky decision in leaving a major label for his own Frolic Room Records, choosing an independent grassroots approach in exchange for artistic freedom.
“It’s about 400 times more work,” said Cabrera of absorbing all production and promotional duties, but asserts, “I was really excited and proud of the music…so that’s what I did.”
On his current tour, Cabrera’s soulful lyrics stand out even more so than usual, as he promises fans a “cool acoustic” concert. “You just hear the songs raw,” he added.
“Raw” certainly embodies the sound that has made Cabrera popular across the genres and across the world. The talented singer-songwriter lives encompassed by music, a passion embedded within and even outwardly, as tattoos of inspirations such as The Beatles and Louis Armstrong illustrate his body.
Responding to the thought of one day having his image inked upon an admirer, Cabrera laughed off the idea, saying, “I don’t know if anybody would get my picture on them, but that would be interesting.”
However, he does admit to liking lyrical tattoos in his honor and added that having, “something that means so much to somebody is the coolest thing in the world.”
While not typically one to make New Year’s resolutions, Cabrera constantly aims to move forward and evolve as a person and musician, describing his joy as “helping people through music and having fun along the way.”
Fans will definitely have fun along the way, too, so “sit back, relax” and celebrate Cabrera on his way up.
