Have a Taste of Jo Dee Messina's Delicious Surprise
April 2009
Serving up a Delicious Surprise, Jo Dee Messina has returned to the touring circuit, with dates booked through summer in support of her aforementioned fourth studio album.
The award-winning country artist known for hits “That’s the Way,” “Bring on the Rain,” and “Burn,” among others, described her non-overproduced new album as having
“more love songs than ever in my history.”
Messina finishes her limited engagement “The Music Room Series” this week, an intimate start to her tour in which fans were encouraged to ask questions, request songs, and essentially hang out as if only separated by a coffee table in the artist’s living room.
Though Messina can write everywhere and does not have a designated creative environment, Messina admitted that her own music room, complete with instruments, a piano, and notebooks at least “beats the kitchen.”
Although, when prompted to imagine incorporating a cooking segment into her tour’s “down home” vibe, Messina agreed, “Actually, we could do that, too! We’ll do that in the fall.”
Laughing for a moment, the possibility of then adding famed Southern chef Paula Deen to the mix fueled her excitement. “I love, love, love Paula Deen! I think she’s just hysterical!”
Hysterical might also describe Messina’s New Year, juggling life as first-time mom to son Noah, born in mid-January, promoting her newest single “Shine,” and getting back into performing shape.
An avid runner, Messina said, “I’m just really honkerin’ down with my diet and exercise,” and plans to continue her regime while on tour.
The straightforward, fun-loving girl, who moved to Nashville at 19 to pursue her music, has made a successful career for more than a decade by having a good time and always remaining true to herself as an artist.
“Whatever you do, don’t let anything stop you…follow your dreams,” encouraged Messina, a motto ever-present in her heartfelt songs.
Don’t try to make her choose a favorite, though. “What an evil question! I can’t pick just one!”
Perhaps it hasn’t been written yet?
“Maybe that’s it,” she said with a laugh, “Yeah, yeah, let’s go with that!”
As for the rest of the future, Messina stated simply, “My music’s about being real and relatable. There’s always a story to be told, so I’m ready to tell it.”
