Jeremiah was a bullfrog, was a good friend of mine.
Back in the early ‘70s, the music of Three Dog Night would have been nearly unavoidable, considering they had over twenty consecutive Top 40 hits, such as “Joy to the World,” “Mama Told Me Not to Come,” and “One,” and sold more albums and concert tickets than any other band at the time. So chances are you, too, were friends with Jeremiah.
Dubbed “the soundtrack of a generation,” even before the Bee Gees got Saturday Night Fever, the band continues a rigorous tour schedule.
The name Three Dog Night stems from an aboriginal Australian practice of sleeping with dogs for warmth, three on the coldest nights.
Though Hutton and Cory Wells are now two of the original three-member band, Hutton explained of the choice, “I like the idea that three notes make a chord, a harmony. It’s kinda magical, the number three, I think.”
Besides, as fans know, one is the loneliest number and two, well, it can be as bad as one.
Now leading a group of six, Hutton expressed his pride in maintaining their longevity and talents over the last four decades. “Nobody’s faking it in our group. Everybody can really play and can really sing. I think we sound like the records.” With a laugh, he noted they refrain from using Teleprompters, assuring, “We remember the words!”
Typically, the band does about 80 performances annually, and Hutton never feels a boredom or lack of energy playing the same songs for so many years.
“I think if we were doing a Broadway thing where you’re in the same venue every night for a year or something, that might get a bit hard to do, but traveling all the time and playing in different environments - it’s always fun and it’s always different,” he said.
Currently in the process of recording new material, Hutton said fans will hear a variety of styles including
a capella, bluegrass, funk, rock, blues, and ballads. In the age of Internet music sharing, Hutton expects the band to explore downloading as a means of release for this future album.
“All we can really do is go into the studio and follow our hearts musically,” said Hutton.
With so many accomplishments and continued worldwide acclaim, Hutton reflected on his joyous career with Three Dog Night and an important lesson learned: “I should’ve dressed more like Cary Grant.”
