Back in 1969, appropriately a time when many believed the peaceful “Age of Aquarius” approached its dawning, another astrological wonder came into being.
In combining the elements of Earth, Wind, and Fire, Maurice White formed a unique musical sound that has since become a true “shining star” in pop and R&B history.
Sharing their tour stage with Chicago this summer, Earth, Wind, & Fire (EWF) have likewise achieved astounding career milestones including numerous Grammy awards and nominations, halls of fame inductions, and simply, redefining the boundaries of genre.
“The recent highlight, of course, is playing for President,” said bassist and founding member, Verdine White, referring to their performance at the Governors’ Dinner earlier this year.
“He’s really a cool guy,” he added of President Obama.
Aside from their commercial successes with songs like “September,” “Shining Star,” and “Boogie Wonderland,” EWF, like Chicago, have dedicated themselves to various charitable causes throughout their career.
White and fellow primary members, Philip Bailey and Ralph Johnson, as well as the rest of the group, have partnered with Chicago during this tour to raise awareness and donations in support of ending world hunger and poverty.
“We’re doing our part,” said White, who often devotes time to encourage and nurture young musicians in their growth process and has lent advice by appearing as a guest judge on "American Idol."
“It’s important to connect with younger artists,” he said, continuing, “They’re exposed to so much music that it’s great that they can be exposed to our music, as well.
Though they might not see an overwhelming population of teens and twenty-somethings in concert attendance, certainly EWF has made a lasting impact which keeps fans, young and old, coming year after year.
“The tour is fantastic, and everybody sounds great,” White said confidently.
With the promise of new music in the future, White concluded, “We’re happy with everything we’re doing right now.”
