_New Artist Krista Takes Back Brooklyn
September 2009
Nowadays, it seems the go-to for young aspiring singers is to stand in line with tens of thousands of other hopefuls and await their chance to have Simon Cowell judge their fate of becoming the next “American Idol.”
If not vying for stardom on a reality television show, many just get lucky or know the right people to make them lucky.
In an interesting twist of fate, twenty-two-year-old Brooklyn native Krista has been granted an opportunity that mere mortals can only dream to obtain, without enduring the suspenseful trials of Ryan Seacrest breaking for commercials.
Krista has both luck and “American Idol” to thank for her chance at the spotlight- rather, an American Idol, the original rags-to-riches winner, Kelly Clarkson.
The unknown emerging talent first performed with Clarkson in the Bahamas and made an impression enough to earn an opening slot on six of the pop superstar’s tour dates.
“It was kinda random,” she said of the experience. “They put me on a bill with [Kelly Clarkson], and I was just like ‘Cool, I get to meet her, see her, hear her, and actually grace the same stage. This is awesome.’”
Writing songs since she was nine, Krista signed with J Records after about two years working on her 12-song debut album Taking Back Brooklyn, which will be released digitally on September 15th.
“There are some really emotional, beautiful ballads and some really awesome, aggressive, upbeat songs,” she said of the record.
Krista’s single “Temporary Insanity” encompasses her range of style, which she describes as “a little bit of rock, a little bit of hip/hop, a little bit of pop…all the things that make up me.”
Inspired by a spectrum of talent from Billie Holiday to Led Zepplin to Salt-n-Pepa, Krista confided, “I very much want to walk in the footsteps of Bono. That man has done so much for the world and for music.”
Down-to-earth and well-spoken, Krista favors her song “Missile,” which she calls “a deeply personal song.”
“Every time I get a chance to share it with a large audience, I feel it’s doing something for me, and it’s validating every moment that I went through that inspired that song,” she said.
While fans can get a glimpse of Krista through her music, personally, she enjoys cooking (hardcore Food Network-type cooking such as Portobello mushrooms with sweet potato stuffing) and relaxing with a good comedy like recent favorite, I Love You, Man.
While plans to appear on future tour dates are undetermined, for now, Krista said of Clarkson, “We are having lots of fun together. She’s just an awesome girl, an amazing person.”
Embracing her new touring lifestyle, Krista dismissed any potential negatives like constant travel or overwhelming scheduling, saying, “I only focus on the positive ‘cause you only get back the positive if you put out the positive.”
Promising a show not-to-be-missed, Krista encourages audiences to come “have some fun and get nice and sweaty!”
