Turner Classic Movies (TCM) Classic Film Festival 2013
April 2013
It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World 50th Anniversary Screening & Cast Panel
Stanley Kramer's comedic masterpiece It's A Mad, Mad, Mad World returned to its premiere venue, Arclight Cinemas' Cinerama Dome, for a special 50th Anniversary screening on the closing day of the festival. Stanley's widow, Karen Sharpe-Kramer, affectionately calls the Dome, "The House that Stanley Built," as the legendary filmmaker did indeed commission the theater to be built specifically for his 1968 madcap comedy.
Known for directing classics like Mad World, Judgement at Nuremberg, and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?, Kramer, who died in 2001, would have celebrated his 100th birthday this year, as well. The screening was preceded by an introductory panel consisting of Karen Sharpe-Kramer and cast members Mickey Rooney, Marvin Kaplan, and Barrie Chase. All in attendance were reminded of the great loss of Jonathan Winters, who passed just two weeks prior to his scheduled appearance at the event.
Love Finds Andy Hardy and I found my love, Mickey Rooney. The ever-smiling 92-years-young legend will forever be my child (and adult)-hood crush, and it was a truly thrilling and momentous privilege to see him in person. One of my favorite aspects of the TCM Classic Film Festival is that it can provide fans with bucket list and life-changing moments, and this occasion undoubtedly belongs in that category for me.
In this clip, Karen tells the stories of how the film impacted the nation following Robert Kennedy's assassination and the casting of Jonathan Winters. Oh, and wait for the zinger at the end - Mickey's got jokes!
