On Halloween, Crocodile Rock Café will be packed with costumed concert-goers celebrating the release of local band Sandlot Heroes’ debut CD Pretend That We’re Famous.
In addition to their 2007 single So reaching success on B104’s radio waves, their latest, Out of My Hands, has been featured on the station’s daily rotation since August, cultivating the most-requested spot on multiple countdowns.
It’s really cool when you write a song that you really think has legs…that it could carry us pretty far, said bassist and vocalist Jake Lare of their hit single. To see it do so well in your own area…it’s pretty rewarding, and that’s why I got into this. I’m thankful we even made it this far.
Members Dan Kastelnik, Chris Morrison, Anz Gibson, and Lare have been entertaining an increasingly hectic schedule in preparation for the release show and their eventual goal of nationwide recognition.
When asked how the band handles the demands of the music business, Lare stated simply, This can’t be a hobby. You literally have to dive into it. You have to be doing this for a reason.
Describing their pop/rock sound as mixture of Jimmy Eat World and One Republic, Lare said, We were really trying to find our own sound, and we were going through so many different lineup changes that it took a year to record this. He added, All this work has just been to get to the starting point, and that’s where we’re at now.
Lare, who also co-writes every song with lead singer and guitarist Kastelnik, believes that no matter what potential notoriety brings, the four Bethlehem area locals will remain the same.
You just kind of have to really appreciate it and not get sucked into the whole superficial world. You have to keep your head on straight, he said.
With the promise of signing a deal with a major record label in the near future, Sandlot Heroes might not have to pretend they’re famous much longer.
