_Eric Hutchinson Keys in for Kelly Clarkson Tour
September 2009
If you’re all about the wordplay of artists like Jason Mraz, meet Eric Hutchinson, a 28-year-old musician from Maryland who’s being lauded as the next artist to follow in the catchy and intellectually lyrical world of pop singer-songwriters.
If he wants to rock, he rocks. If he wants to roll, he rolls. And he can definitely roll with the punches – as proven by his recovery of a potentially career-stalling setback a couple of years ago.
Originally signed to Madonna’s Maverick Records, Hutchison lost his recording deal when the label shut down. Undeterred, Hutchinson independently released his debut “Sounds Like This” and upon acknowledgement from celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, the album climbed to a top ten position on iTunes in late 2007.
Best known for the song “Rock & Roll,” as featured on “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2” soundtrack, Hutchinson’s on the rise, signified by appearing as an opening act on some of Kelly Clarkson’s tour dates, including the Allentown Fair on Thursday, September 3rd.
To the tour’s credit, Hutchinson will quite literally get the pre-Clarkson party started, as he describes his own style akin to hosting a fun-filled bash.
“It’s just a feel-good show…it’s upbeat, and I believe strongly that the show is 50% crowd and 50% performer, so we try to real hard to get the audience involved,” he said.
Ever fan-friendly, Hutchinson makes a diligent effort to communicate with his devotees through his official website, writing a personal blog and sharing a month-by-month list of his “7 Favorite Things,” which often highlights his characteristic sharp wit and humor.
“I wanted something to stay connected to the fans and show them that I’m a normal person, and I do normal things,” he explained.
Normal things, of course, include performing on talk shows such as the former “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” and earning celebrity endorsement from some of the most powerful voices in entertainment today, namely Hilton and now, superstar Clarkson.
While one day hoping to collaborate with rapper Kanye West, the soulful Hutchinson finds inspiration in “specific situations in life that don’t get written about or don’t get discussed in music or movies.”
He added, “I find a lot of songs about ‘I love you, I can’t live without you.’ I find a lot more often, it’s ‘I love you, but you make me crazy’ or ‘I love you, but I’m married to your sister.’ So, I try to find that gray area.”
Currently writing songs for a new album, Hutchinson’s energetic and good-natured personality will undoubtedly charm the Fair audience.
“It’s been really gratifying,” he said, “to have these songs that I believe in and saw through - to have people responding to them.”
Given the response already, Hutchinson’s not far away from his own “breakaway” success.
