_WP Interviews Diahann Carroll
at the Women In Film Crystal + Lucy Awards
June 2012
Carroll as the titular "Julia"
I miss TVLand. I miss Nick-at-Nite. Sure, I know they're still there. I still watch them, though now the fondness includes an inner disappointment that these aren't the networks I grew up loving.
I miss the '90s when reruns were actually of classic TV shows, with the emphasis on classic - the beloved ones that had gone off the air decades prior, the nostalgic, the ones that weren't on VHS then and aren't yet on DVD now. These networks once gave them homes in syndicate posterity and opportunities for me to come home from school and have dinner in the 1960's.
That's how I became introduced to Julia Baker and her son, Corey, and why in 2012, I looked at a red carpet arrival list and zeroed in on a name I've known since those reruns.
Diahann Carroll is an actress and singer, a veteran of Broadway, and an Oscar nominee, but to generations, she is most notable as the woman who brought a nurse and widowed mother named Julia to life.
"Julia" aired from 1968-1971 and propelled Carroll to fame as the first African-American actress to star as a lead character in a television series. She won a Golden Globe and received an Emmy nomination for the groundbreaking role.
If you want to see a piece of history, check out this funny scene which quite succinctly shows how times have changed since it's airing -
"Julia" in 1968.
I had the privilege of speaking with Diahann at the Women In Film Crystal + Lucy Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in June, a month premature of her 77th birthday. Looking as naturally beautiful and radiant as ever, she glides with an air of almost regal importance. Watch the interview below!
